Pulli Koddel (Pooli Kodail)


Pooli Kodail

Pulli Koddel (Pooli Kodail) is a hearty vegetable stew that has a lovely sweet and sour flavour.

Ingredients

200 gms tuvar daal
100 gms soaked brown channa
1/2 kg tavte (sweet gourd) cut in 1 inch pieces
1/2 kg kumda (winter melon) cut in 1 inch pieces
2-3 brinjals cut in 1 inch pieces
1/4 kg tomatoes chopped fine
1 drumstick cut in 2 inch pieces
4-5 green chillies
50 gms jaggery
100 gms tamarind
1 bunch corander leaves chopped fine
2 string curry leaves
1 pinch hing
1/2 coconut grated
10-12 red chillies
1/4 tsp methi seeds
2 tsp urad daal
50 gms dhania
2 tsp jeera
1 tsp channa daal

Tempering
oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp hing
1 string curry leaves
2-3 red chillies
1/2 tsp urad daal

Directions

Boil tuvar daal until it is soft and keep it aside.
Boil the channa until they are cooked. Drain the water and keep it aside.
In a vessel add 2-3 glasses of water, mix jaggery,tamarind, tumeric and salt.
then add 1 string curry leaves and 4-5 green chillies and start boiling it. When it starts boiling add all the cut vegeatables.
let it cook until the veggies are completely cooked. Do not drain the water.
In a pan add oil,hing, methi seeds, urad daal, channa daal, when the daal starts getting slightly brown add 1 string curry leaves, red chillies. when it turns reddish add coriander seeds and jeera. then add the grated coconut and fry it well.
Grind the entire masala without water.
In the veggies pot add the daal,channa and the masala and salt. then cook it for 15 to 20 mins.
Then add coriander leaves.
For the tempering take a little oil in a pan add mustard seeds, when they start crackling add hing, curry leaves, red chillies and urad daal. when the urad dal starts getting a little brown add this to the the curry and mix well.
Serve this with white plain rice.
